Leadership Skills Course Syllabus

 

Course Description

The goals of the "Leadership Skills" online course are to improve your leadership skills through self-discovery, group discussions during synchronous sessions (teleconferences or face-to-face sessions), and collaborative networking.

The authors believe that the course content will arm you with actionable strategies and practical knowledge to help you address the challenges in academic and health sciences university environment. The topics chosen for this online course are relevant to the mission, vision, values, and strategic goals of our institution.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this online course, the participants should be able to: 

  • Strengthen their leadership performance.
  • Enhance understanding of the institutional culture and team-work.
  • Know how to run successful meetings.
  • Know how to recruit and retain top talent.
  • Improve and apply individual management and strategic planning skills.
  • Improve their finance analysis skills. 

 

Course Organization

This course is organized into two learning modules, found on the course menu under the section “Modules.” Within each module there are multiple topics. Upon completion of the quizzes for each activity, you will receive a respective number of course credits and/or CME/CNE credit hours.

 

Module #1: Defining Leadership (1.0 CME/CNE credit)

This module has two topics:  What is Leadership and How to Develop It, and Leadership Styles.

 

M1T1: What is Leadership and How to Develop It? (0.5 CME/CNE credits)

By the end of this session, the participants should be able to: 

  • Discuss and evaluate the core leadership competencies and structures needed for success.

Upon successful completion of this topic and one quiz, you will receive 0.5 credits and/or ___0.5___CME/CNE credit hours.

 

M1T2: Leadership Styles (0.5 CME/CNE credits)

By the end of this session, the participants should be able to: 

  • Discuss and distinguish different types of leadership (autocratic, laissez-faire, transformative, participatory, transactional, bureaucratic, situational, etc.).
  • Understand different types of decision-making approaches.
  • Formulate pro-active and strategic approach to advance ideas and gain support. 

Upon successful completion of this topic and one quiz, you will receive 0.5 credits and/or ___0.5___CME/CNE credit hours.

 

Module #2: Accomplishing Leadership (6.0 CME/CNE credits)  

This module consists of eight topics:  Understanding Leadership in Academic Institutions, Faculty Satisfaction and Institutional Vitality, Know How to Recruit and Retain Top Talent, Responsible Stewardship, Teamwork and Relationship Building, Running Successful Meetings, Strategic Planning, and The Basics of Building a Budget.

 

M2T1: Understanding Leadership in Academic Institutions (1.0 CME/CNE credit)

By the end of this session, the participants should be able to: 

  • Recognize how institutional and personal missions and values align.
  • Discuss and understand the organizational structure, and your department/office/school and individual roles in serving the institution.
  • Discuss institutional core values and the expected behaviors associated with those values.
  • Discuss the strategic priorities of TTUHSC El Paso, focusing on institutional change and culture adaptation.
  • Understand how institutional and leadership missions and values align.

Upon successful completion of this topic and one quiz, you will receive one (1) credit and/or ___1___CME/CNE credit hour.

 

M2T2: Faculty Satisfaction and Institutional Vitality (1.5 CME/CNE credits)

By the end of this session, the participants should be able to: 

  • Define faculty satisfaction and its importance.
  • Discuss the impact of faculty satisfaction on institutional performance and faculty attrition.
  • Present national overview of challenges in academic medicine, nursing and dental education.
  • Evaluate predictors of faculty satisfaction and departure at Health Sciences University.
  • Present and discuss TTUHSC El Paso vitality study.

Upon successful completion of these two topics and one quiz, you will receive 1.5 credits and/or ___1.5___CME/CNE credit hours.

 

M2T3: Know How to Recruit and Retain Top Talent (0.5 CME/CNE credits)

By the end of this session, the participants should be able to: 

  • Review the search process at TTUHSC El Paso.
  • Assist their department and institution with successfully recruiting diverse candidates.
  • Know how to successfully interview for an inclusive place.
  • Discuss the best practices of outreach before and during the search.

Upon successful completion of this topic and one quiz, you will receive 0.5 credits and/or ___0.5___CME/CNE credit hours.

 

M2T4: Responsible Stewardship (0.5 CME/CNE credits)

By the end of this session, the participants should be able to: 

  • Cultivate a positive connection to the existing and potential TTUHSC El Paso donors.
  • Promote their institution, school, department or office.
  • Identify new and cultivate existing donor opportunities.
  • Increase brand awareness of our institution, school, department or office.

Upon successful completion of this topic and one quiz, you will receive 0.5 credits and/or ___0.5___CME/CNE credit hours.

 

M2T5: Teamwork and Relationship Building (1.0 CME/CNE credits)

By the end of this session, the participants should be able to: 

  • Foster leadership traits and behaviors that build high-performing teams. 
  • Define the characteristics of effective teams.
  • Know the stages of team development.
  • Know how to participate in creative communication and consensus-building.
  • Know how to set and communicate experiences.
  • Understand the barriers to teamwork.
  • Illustrate the concept of accountability in a teamwork environment.
  • Know how to address and discuss inappropriate team member behavior.
  • Know how to develop and lead virtual teams.

Upon successful completion of this topic and one quiz, you will receive one (1) credit and/or ___1___CME/CNE credit hour.

 

M2T6: Running Successful Meetings (0.5 CME/CNE credits)

By the end of this session, the participants should be able to: 

  • Know how to efficiently run successful meetings (in F2F and virtual environments).
  • Know how to construct meeting agenda.
  • Know how to write meeting minutes.
  • Discuss the nominal group technique.

Upon successful completion of this topic and one quiz, you will receive 0.5 credits and/or ___0.5___CME/CNE credit hours.

 

M2T7: Strategic Planning (0.5 CME/CNE credits)

By the end of this session, the participants should be able to: 

  • Know how to assess vision, mission, and goals.
  • Define strategies and priorities.
  • Define success measures (metrics) for each goal.
  • Discuss and evaluate the resource estimates and forecasts.
  • Present the action plan (timeline and completion due date).

Upon successful completion of this topic and one quiz, you will receive 0.5 credits and/or ___0.5___CME/CNE credit hours.

 

M2T8: The Basics of Building a Budget (0.5 CME/CNE credits)

By the end of this session, the participants should be able to: 

  • Discuss the organizational budget process at the system, institutional, departmental and office levels.
  • Discuss the differences between academic and business institutions. Learn how legislative sessions drive budgets, and how budgets are developed and aligned.
  • Discuss productivity improvement areas in your respective school/department.
  • Know how to increase revenue flows (service and research priorities).Understand different skill-sets of your faculty, and reorganize their clinical, research, and teaching mission accordingly.
  • Know how to upgrade the operating model and capabilities (improve clinical operations cost-effectiveness, support service optimization, research portfolio rationalization, etc.)

Assignments and Grading:

  • For each module or session/topic in the course, you will complete a Self-Check Quiz. You must score 80% on each quiz. You will have three attempts for each quiz.

"Religious holy day" means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Texas Tax Code §11.20.A learner who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence. A learner who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence.

 

Instructor’s Expectations

You will be expected to log into the Canvas course regularly to be aware of possible announcements/reminders and to pace your progress in the course. Course participants are expected to maintain an online environment conducive to learning, which includes “netiquette” (Internet etiquette). The following site includes basic rules for Online Discussion Netiquette. Ensure that your e-mail messages, discussion board postings, and other electronic communications are thoughtful. Diverse opinions we welcome in this course. The following are prohibited:

  • making offensive remarks in e-mail or the discussion board
  • using inappropriate language or discussing inappropriate topics online
  • spamming
  • hacking,
  • using TTUHSC El Paso or Canvas e-mail or discussion board for commercial purposes
  • using all caps (considered shouting in online communications)
  • cyber-bullying or online harassment of any type

 

Disclosure

This syllabus is intended to give the participant guidance in what is covered during the IFDP 19 and will be followed as closely as possible. However, the OFD reserves the right to modify, supplement and make changes as the program needs arise or change.
