ADULT TEACHING AND LEARNING COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Description

This course provides information on how to design and deliver effective in-person and online sessions, with a positive impact on adult learners and their practice. It is intended to improve the process of creating your learning objectives, applying different  learning formats (e.g., large group sessions, small group facilitation, team-based learning (TBL), clinical and bedside teaching),  and developing and analyzing different types of learner assessment.  Upon completion of this course, you will be equipped with effective knowledge and skills to efficiently present different learning formats to your students, and provide an effective feedback.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Design and deliver an effective course, module and session, with a positive impact on adult learners and their practice.
  2. Know how to create SMART objectives.
  3. Know how to apply different instructional methods and learning formats.
  4. Know how to formulate and analyze different types of learner assessment.
  5. Know how to provide effective and constructive feedback.
  6. Know how to create a student-centric, self-directed, and interactive learning material
  7. Know how to efficiently teach in different learning formats (e.g., large group teaching, small group facilitation, team-based learning, clinical and bedside teaching).

 

Course Organization

This course is organized into three learning modules, found on the course menu under the section “Modules.” Upon completion of the quizzes, you will receive a respective number of IFDP credits and/or CME/CNE credit hours.

 

Adult Teaching and Learning Course Outline

This course includes three modules for the preparation of adult learning courses, modules and sessions. Within each module there are multiple topics.

 

In this module you will discuss the differences between pedagogy and andragogy, review adult learning principles, learning theories, strategies and categories of learning. Upon successful completion of this module and quiz, you will receive one IFDP credit and/or ___1___CME/CNE credit hour. 

 

This module discusses adult teaching and learning process, starting from the needs assessment in Introduction to the Educational Cycle and writing learning objectives, through choosing appropriate instructional methods, to performing learner assessment and providing effective feedback.  The module consists of four topics: 

        • How to write learning objectives, Quiz
        • Instructional methods, Quiz
        • Learner assessment, Quiz
        • Effective feedback, Quiz

Upon successful completion of this module (four topics and four quizzes), you will receive four IFDP credits and/or ___4___CME/CNE credit hours. Alternatively, you can select, join and complete individual online sessions/topics. 

 

This module presents best strategies of teaching and learning in different formats, from large group setting, through small group facilitation and team-based learning, to clinical and bedside teaching. Participants interested in teaching and learning in clinical skills and simulation environment are encouraged to join our Clinical Skills/Simulation Courses. The module consists of five topics: 

        • Large group learning and teaching, Quiz

        • Clinical and bedside teaching, Quiz

  • Using a word processor
  • Using email for communication, attaching documents in email
  • Internet search engines and browsers
  • Familiarity with Canvas

 

Assignments and Grading:

  • For each module or session/topic in the course, you will complete a Self-Check Quiz. You must score 80% on each quiz. You will have three attempts for each quiz.
  • IFDP participants are required to create and present a 10-minute oral presentation via teleconference (date: mid-December 2021; TBD)

“Academic dishonesty” includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, collusion, falsifying academic records, misrepresenting facts, and any act designed to give unfair academic advantage to the learner (such as, but not limited to, submission of essentially the same assignment for two courses without the prior permission of the instructor) or the attempt to commit such an act. If a learner is involved in any form of academic misconduct and is proven that the action took place, the instructor may initiate a disciplinary action.

 "Religious holy day" means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Texas Tax Code §11.20.A learner who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence. A learner who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence.

 

Instructor’s Expectations

You will be expected to log into the Canvas course regularly to be aware of possible announcements/reminders and to pace your progress in the course. Course participants are expected to maintain an online environment conducive to learning, which includes “netiquette” (Internet etiquette). The following site includes basic rules for Online Discussion Netiquette. Ensure that your e-mail messages, discussion board postings, and other electronic communications are thoughtful. Diverse opinions we welcome in this course. The following are prohibited:

  • making offensive remarks in e-mail or the discussion board
  • using inappropriate language or discussing inappropriate topics online
  • spamming
  • hacking
  • using TTUHSC El Paso or Canvas e-mail or discussion board for commercial purposes
  • using all caps (considered shouting in online communications)
  • cyber-bullying or online harassment of any type

 

Disclosure

This syllabus is intended to give the participant guidance in what is covered during the IFDP 20 and will be followed as closely as possible. However, the OFD reserves the right to modify, supplement and make changes as the program needs arise or change.
