Course Description

This course will develop your skills in writing grants.  Topics also include sources of research funding and visualizing your data.

Course Delivery: Online (asynchronous).

Course Material:  A total of 20 videos and one Adobe PDF.

Course Organization

You may watch as many of the videos as you wish.  CME and CNE credits will not be offered for this course.

Course Objectives

Learners who view all of the videos and read the PDF will be able to

1.     List three strategies to help principal investigators identify and secure funding from foundations.

2.     State four key items that form the specific aims of a grant application that will be submitted to the National Institutes of Health.

3.     Identify a software package for data visualization.

 

Assessment

To earn contact hours towards graduation from the IFDP, you will be asked to answer the following two questions after watching each video that is of interest to you.  

    1. Summarize the video or PDF in your own words. Your summary must be at least 25 words in length and not exceed 50 words.

    2. Answer this question (there is no minimum or maximum word limit to your answer): How will you apply the information that you learned to your work?

Your responses to these two questions will be submitted via Canvas.  The course instructor will grade your responses within 48 hours of submission.

Assignments and Grading

  • Grading will be Pass or Fail.  The course instructor will grade your responses to the two questions within 48 hours of submission. Answering both questions properly will result in a grade of Pass for that particular video or PDF and the granting of the appropriate amount of contact hours (please see the syllabus for details).

  • You will create a protocol for a research/scholarly project that is suitable for submission to the Institutional Review Board. This protocol must be submitted to the Office of Faculty Development by 04/01/2022. Detailed instructions can be found in the section entitled Research/Scholarly Project Proposal in the Institutional Faculty Development Program 20 Syllabus.

"Religious holy day" means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Texas Tax Code §11.20.A learner who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence. A learner who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence.

 

Instructor’s Expectations

You will be expected to log into the Canvas course regularly to be aware of possible announcements/reminders and to pace your progress in the course. Course participants are expected to maintain an online environment conducive to learning, which includes “netiquette” (Internet etiquette). The following site includes basic rules for Online Discussion Netiquette. Ensure that your e-mail messages, discussion board postings, and other electronic communications are thoughtful. Diverse opinions we welcome in this course. The following are prohibited:

    • making offensive remarks in e-mail or the discussion board

    • using inappropriate language or discussing inappropriate topics online

    • spamming

    • hacking,

    • using TTUHSC El Paso or Canvas e-mail or discussion board for commercial purposes

    • using all caps (considered shouting in online communications)

    • cyber-bullying or online harassment of any type

This syllabus is intended to give the participant guidance in what is covered during the Institutional Faculty Development Program 19 and will be followed as closely as possible. However, the Office of Faculty Development reserves the right to modify, supplement and make changes as the program needs arise or change.
