Clinical Skills in Simulation-Based Education Course

Course Description

This course in the Faculty Development Course series has eight modules that will give an overview of simulation and its use across all fields of healthcare training. These modules were designed by the Training and Educational Center for Healthcare Simulation (TECHS) with support from faculty and staff across the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso campus and experts in the field.

Goals for this course are:

  • Increase knowledge of best practices in healthcare simulation
  • Prepare educators to efficiently and effectively used simulation-based education 
  • Integrate simulation across disciplines on the TTUHSC El Paso campus using evidence based principles

This course is organized into eight learning modules, found on the course menu under the section “Modules.” Upon completion of the quizzes, you will receive a respective number of course credits and/or CME/CNE credit hours.

 

Module #1: Best Practices for the use of Simulation

  1. Define simulation in the context of health care education
  2. Identify existing literature to support best-practices in simulation education
  3. Know how simulation can support education and practice in your specialty
  4. Review how simulation tools and techniques can support specific educational needs within your field

Module #2: Writing Learning Objectives for a Clinical Simulation Session

  1. Review objective formats
  2. Write educational objectives that are appropriate for learner levels and curricular needs
  3. Describe evaluation of the learner in individual and group setting

Module #3: Simulation Design: Key Components of Responsive and Relevant Scenarios

  1. Discuss evidence-based guidelines for effective scenario development
  2. Implement evidence-based practice standards for pre-scenario planning
  3. Adapt existing scenarios or design custom activities to address regional DEI issues and needs

Module#4:  Conducting simulation scenarios 

  1. Describe existing best practice guidelines for scenario design
  2. Discuss key features and activities within simulation to enhance learner engagement and education
  3. Implement innovative scripting and staging using available technology and resources to enhance your scenario design

Module #5: Assessment and Feedback in a Clinical Simulation Session

  1. Describe the concepts of assessment and feedback
  2. Integrate assessment and feedback into a clinical simulation session
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in choosing and developing assessment and feedback tools

Module #6: Feedback, Debriefing and Guided Reflection in Healthcare Simulation

  1. Identify the distinct roles of debriefing, feedback, and guided reflection in the debriefing process
  2. Know the role of facilitator and educator in the simulation learning process
  3. Differentiate the most common techniques used to organize debriefing sessions
  4. Apply techniques from debriefing best practice to engage learners in experiential learning
  5. Integrate educational tools during debriefing to allow a cohesive take-home message

Module #7: Including Standardized Patient (SP) Methodology in Skills Training

  1. Define commonly used terms in SP Methodology
  2. Describe strengths and limitations of SPs as co-educators
  3. Integrate unique facets of SPs in event design
  4. Ensure understanding of the SP and compatibility with planned tasks
  5. Create a shared understanding of SP training and responsibilities
  6. Identify what each stakeholder needs to know before, during, and after the event

Module #8: Curriculum Integration: Best  Practices and Examples

  1. Describe the concepts in different levels of curriculum integration
  2. Discuss the importance of a theoretical framework when integrating simulation into a course program or curriculum
  3. Discuss the elements for integrating simulation across the curriculum

Technical Skill Requirements:

  • Using a word processor
  • Using email for communication, attaching documents in email
  • Internet search engines and browsers
  • Familiarity with Canvas

Assignments and Grading:

  • For each module or session/topic in the course, you will complete a Self-Check Quiz. You must score 80% on each quiz. You will have three attempts for each quiz.

“Academic dishonesty” includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, collusion, falsifying academic records, misrepresenting facts, and any act designed to give unfair academic advantage to the learner (such as, but not limited to, submission of essentially the same assignment for two courses without the prior permission of the instructor) or the attempt to commit such an act.  "Religious holy day" means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Texas Tax Code §11.20.A learner who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence. A learner who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence.

Instructor’s Expectations

You will be expected to log into the Canvas course regularly to be aware of possible announcements/reminders and to pace your progress in the course. Course participants are expected to maintain an online environment conducive to learning, which includes “netiquette” (Internet etiquette). The following site includes basic rules for Online Discussion Netiquette. Ensure that your e-mail messages, discussion board postings, and other electronic communications are thoughtful. Diverse opinions we welcome in this course. The following are prohibited:

  • making offensive remarks in e-mail or the discussion board
  • using inappropriate language or discussing inappropriate topics online
  • spamming
  • hacking,
  • using TTUHSC El Paso or Canvas e-mail or discussion board for commercial purposes
  • using all caps (considered shouting in online communications)
  • cyber-bullying or online harassment of any type

Disclosure

This syllabus is intended to give the participant guidance in what is covered during the IFDP 20 and will be followed as closely as possible. However, the OFD reserves the right to modify, supplement and make changes as the program needs arise or change.
